Our son is participating in a Reading Bowl competition through school, so I’ve been to their practices several times. The kids are so cute, and it’s been fun watching them with each other and figuring out what they’re like. They’re all precious, but there’s one girl in particular who I catch myself staring at … because of her hair.
You see, she’s a redhead and I’m always bit partial to redheads anyway. I had a friend in college with the most gorgeous auburn hair, creamy skin and deep brown eyes. My husband also has red hair, though it’s toward the lighter end of the spectrum. So when we started dating and then when we got engaged, I kept thinking, “Maybe someday if we have a girl she’ll have red hair like Nancy’s!” Well, we do have a girl and she’s cute as can be, but the only red in her hair is a few highlights you notice in the summertime. And I wouldn’t trade her for anything.
The girl at school, though, has hair that hangs past her shoulders in a beautiful mix of auburn, strawberry blonde, butterscotch, and burnt orange — every shade of red you could imagine. I look at her hair and think, “There’s no way you’d ever get that out of a bottle!” But most of all I look at her hair and think how creative it shows our God is. The Master Artist paints each strand of hair exactly the right color so that it blends with all the others in just the right way.
How great it is to serve the God who knows us by name, numbers the hairs on our heads, and makes us all a masterpiece of perfection in our own way!
