The Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)
Here’s a question to start your week (though I’m not getting around to posting this until Tuesday instead of Monday) – how much do you hunger for God? The Bible refers to Jesus in all sorts of capacities, but one of the most important is as the Bread of Life. He is what we need to sustain ourselves!
Just like we need food in our bellies to keep our bodies healthy and energetic, we need the Bread of Life to keep our spiritual lives healthy and thriving. If we don’t eat food, we know that we’ll starve. But the same thing can happen to us spiritually if we don’t feed our souls and feast on God’s Word and His love each day!
My middle grades Sunday school class talked a bit last week about the excuses we give for not spending time with God – we’re too busy, we’re not sure He listens, we think church boring, we say we don’t understand the Bible. So we fill our time with all sorts of other things instead. Some of those things (like spending time with godly friends or family) can be good in the long run, but many of the other things can just fill us with the wrong stuff. And once we begin filling ourselves up on the world we learn that it’s a lot harder to find room for God.
It’s easy to give pat answers to the problem and say we just need to read the Bible more or spend more time in prayer, and then we’ll have more room for God. But how do we really do that? What practical things can we commit to doing so that we fill ourselves with God instead of the world?
For me, one of the things I’m committing to is reading a “real” devotional with some meat to it and writing in my prayer journal each day. How about you? What does feasting on the Bread of Life look like in your world? I would love to hear what works for you because I’m always looking for new ideas myself!
Have a blessed week!
Thank you, Lord, for being all that I need. Give me a fresh hunger for you so that I always want more and am able to draw closer to you. Amen.
